The new Mozilla CEO says he could block ad blockers in Firefox and estimates that it would bring in another $150 million, but he doesn't want to do that. Lmao. This guy has really lost the plot. Is he issuing threats to the users of an open-source project? Boy, what a disaster.

Is Mozilla trying hard to kill itself?

17 de dezembro de 2025

In an interview with “The Verge”, the new Mozilla CEO, Enzor-DeMeo, IMHO hints that axing adblockers is something that, at the very least, was on the table in some form and at some point. From the article:

"He says he could begin to block ad blockers in Firefox and estimates that’d bring in another $150 million, but he doesn’t want to do that. It feels off-mission."

It may be just me, but I read this as “I don't want to 😜 😜 but I'll kill AdBlockers in Firefox for buckerinos 😂”. This disappoints and saddens me a lot, and I hope I'm wrong.

@nixCraft He hasn't, yet. But he better take a long, hard look at the telemetry they collect before driving his bus off any nearby cliff. I have to believe that 80% of Firefox users run various ad blockers, and a not inconsiderable number of us have used about:config to neuter their shovelware AI.

$150 million from Google with an 80% user base loss turns into $30 million next year, if they don't just pull the plug out of mercy. And none of us will shift to Chrome.

@nixCraft

Wow remember when Youtube played like 10+ ads per hour describing transgender folks as evil on U.S. television last November?
It's hard to grasp how constant that is.

Can you imagine someone grabbing your shoulder to froth obscenity and lies every five minutes?
It's cruel and unusual.

Imagine the internet turned up to 10 telling you to kys, for months.

Someone is supposed to get a laugh or a little star for leaving the geniva convention in place? Woop.

@nixCraft there are so many things that users actually want and need and instead of focusing on those they decide to go against what their users want.

They could just look at all the enshitified services and apps and decide to build a foss alternative. As they did in the early years.
But for years now they have turned away from that.

This guy is so actively controversial.

My best guess as to why is that he was placed there to actively destroy Mozilla so that there is no competition left.

@nixCraft I don't understand. Isn't this EXACTLY what you'd want someone in this role to say? That some sources of revenue ARE off the table because they conflict with the mission?

It only reads as "I'll kill AdBlockers in Firefox for buckerinos" if you're intentionally trying to find a reading that paints this guy and Mozilla in a negative light.

@nixCraft Don't share FUD. There's no realistic way for Mozilla to axe ad blockers and survive. See: the worst move Facebook could do in the interest of proprietary software would be ban leftist Instagram accounts with a real-life platform all at once. We would split/fork and organize elsewhere.

@nixCraft I've already moved on from them. As of yesterday, the only two browsers I'm using are LibreWolf and Brave. (I do keep running copies on my dev server since I have to test websites and components on all browsers, but I don't use them on any of my personal systems any longer.)

@nixCraft I'm confused, what's the big drama this time. Firefox turned down hundreds of millions of dollars in order to keep free ad blockers in the store, and we're meant to be grabbing the pitchforks because "fuck Firefox"? If someone offered Linus Torvalds hundreds of millions to (somehow) disable adblock in the kernel and he turned them down would you criticise Linux as well?

Or should Mozilla keep quiet and have less transparency about business dealings

@nixCraft Is this guy a moron? Literally only reason Firefox exists is adblockers, privacy and lack of cloud and ai bullshit. Screw that up and they'll lose the remaining user share they even still have...

People use ad blockers to protect their computers from scams and malware because Google and other ad companies have failed to do so. They put profit above everything else. I can't believe this guy is on a mission to kill Firefox by the end of this year. People who use ad blockers are also less likely to buy your product if you bug them too much. I can't believe Mozilla has fallen to this level, where the CEO openly issues soft threats for a product that has little market share left.

@nixCraft Can recommend: LibreWolf is a privacy-focused and user-friendly browser based on the latest Firefox version. It blocks trackers, disables telemetry, and offers private search engines, content blocker, and more features.

I hate seeing Mozilla turning to the "evil side" step by step for so long. I use firefox since 2005 or something and for the first time I consider seriously switching to another browser.

I believe the problem with the web in general is capitalism, not just ads or privacy invasion. Unfortunately Mozilla staff (and staff in general) has to get paid each month. Mozilla started with good intentions, faced a lot of tough decisions and keeps taking the bad ones.

@nixCraft I wonder after the "experiment" providing a mastodon instance for users, if Mozilla stopped reading posts here altogether. It's to imagine the organization pushing this forward and still reading what people say about it here.
