Organizations and conferences deal badly with me having no employer or other affiliation. So on badges I often end up working for 'NA' or sometimes even 'null'. Recently I've taken to filling out berthub.eu as employer and that is working out rather well:

Just to clarify, this is an administrative problem, not policy. People will often even invent employers for me, I've been labelled as 'Dutch Intelligence', 'Dutch police', or even as a journalist for a newspaper I once wrote an article for. Or people write down 'PowerDNS' because I founded that in 2000.

@bert_hubert We need a list of "falsehoods programmers believe about employment status".

Interacting with systems and administrations who want everyone and everything to fit into pre-defined categories is exhausting, when none of the categories fit.
