Join us at the #LibreOffice Conference 2026, which will take place in Pordenone, northern Italy, from 10 – 12 September! The Call for Papers is now open: https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2026/03/11/libocon-2026-call-for-papers/ #foss #openSource #freesoftware
@mro @Codeberg Thanks Marcus, we we did our research and planned ahead!
While we manage six major open-source projects used by corporate-industry-hyperscalers and home users alike, we are a tiny non-profit ourselves with only 15 staff. Our expectations are well tuned…
Also, we have our own, dedicated server for our runners all set up. We intend to overhaul our package building and publication too. Looking forward to the migration process!
In February, the #LibreOffice community worked on improvements to Writer and Calc table styles, along with other optimisations and fixes: https://qa.blog.documentfoundation.org/2026/03/10/qa-dev-report-february-2026/ #foss #openSource #freesoftware
Back in May 2019, we said goodbye to SVN and Bugzilla and migrated to Git and GitHub [1]. Since then, we accumulated 188 repositories. 🙀
We're now making a list to decide which ones we're moving to @Codeberg and which are going to be archived and left behind.
While we're doing that, we signed NLnet Labs up as a Codeberg e.V. member!

Legal vs. Legitimate, good article by @hongminhee
> Whatever courts eventually decide about AI reimplementation, the question we need to answer first is not a legal one. It is a social one. Do those who take from the commons owe something back? I think they do. That judgment does not require a verdict
"Can the commons expect something back from those who extract value?" is a key question of Social experience design. The answer forms one of 3 core principles: The Mindfulness principle.
No. You can't expect *anything* back. That philosophical insight is crucial to organizing a healthy commons that's able to retain its value and evolve.
Paint any principles and values on a flag but as long as the battle is scattered farmers holding feeble Copyright Law pitchforks against a vast drone army, its no use. Know thy enemy helps too. It's not proprietary code or corporations. It's hypercapitalism: The Rules of Battle.

"I created this #FreeSoftware and I expect contributions and caretakers". No. Wrong expectation. It doesn't work that way.
As #FOSS dev one starts a project based on ones own self-interested motives. We had needs to be satisfied, and addressing them is the reward, the return value. We cannot *expect* that to just flow to us, must assure it instead. Only where expectations are mutual can we count on them. Actual commitments underpin and drive collaborative arrangements.
> “Ask not what you can do for the commons, but what the commons can do for you.” — First principle of Hedonic peer production.

FOSS is asking sacrifice. Grab your pitchfork, be poor and hungry. Wave our flags of unwarranted expectations. Let's fight the enemy while producing their grain!
Only the most fervent join. Natural activists all, flag bearers in many color variations.
To others there's no rallying cry, no attraction. No reward in sight. There's no intrinsic motivation.

@utrenkner This is from Breezy Weather from #fdroid store. One of the slickest #foss weather apps I've seen. Data in this case comes from #OpenMeteo.

Millions of students are getting locked into closed, proprietary software from Big Tech vendors. Here's how #LibreOffice can give them back their digital sovereignty: https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2026/03/06/libreoffice-for-education-regaining-digital-sovereignty/ #foss #openSource #freesoftware

@joe9nf Yeah, but for nontechy folk who need a good OotB experience right now, even that's a great step up the #freedomladder, especially as the #phosh UI on it looks almost the same as on mainline projects using it. So when/if they decide to step up the ladder to a mainline project like #postmarketOS, #PureOS or #Mobian, the migration will be easier compared to migrating from iOS/Android because of same UI/DE, flatpaks, waydroid, etc.
Personally, I'm using postmarketOS on a #Librem5 and almost everything important works, but I'm not sure I'd recommend to someone who is not already comfortable with #desktopLinux and a #FOSS-only ecosystem.
The EU’s Open Source Software Strategy calls for reducing dependency on proprietary technologies. But for feedback on the Cyber Resilience Act, they're asking for feedback in .xlsx format! This is obviously not ideal – so please sign our open letter: https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2026/03/05/cra-guidances/ #foss #openSource #freesoftware
@opensourceopenmind The downside of this phone AFAIK is that you will be stuck with the old Linux kernel for the rest of the device's life.

I never seen such a detailed write-up of any other talk I have given before as this one of my talk about using FOSS tools in FOSS projects by @jzb in @lwn I feel honored by the article, it really captures the spirit of my talk! https://lwn.net/SubscriberLink/1060649/915a0f56ade5d760/

@TWiT @jp_bennett @RobCampbell Thanks for touching on #LinuxMobile in this episode.
> [01:25:24]: getting ridiculous out there, the whole smartphone debacle we have going on. If someone could make a full-functioning Linux smartphone, I think it's getting to the point where I would pay maybe some serious money for it. I'd be willing to pay the premium dollars just make it work, get a phone on there.
Please check out the #FLX1s from @furilabs It's the most user-friendly option for #MobileLinux currently and stuff just works out of the box, including camera, phone calls, flatpaks, Android apps, etc. The specs are decent and the price is $499 atm.

Sorry to be that guy (just a guy), but:
Codeberg has been under a DDoS attack for hours. I've been supporting, praising and recommending Codeberg for a while now, and situations like this remind me why - a small team running on community donations, fighting to keep FOSS infrastructure alive.
If you rely on Codeberg, consider donating. I will be adding to my donation tonight.
