Powen Shiah and Paul Sharratt are at @OpenForumEurope's EU #OpenSource Policy Summit today in Brussels 馃嚜馃嚭. They鈥檙e attending on behalf of the Sovereign Tech Agency, the first public organization of its kind focused on the long-term maintenance and security of critical software infrastructure we all rely on. This work sits at the intersection of open source, digital sovereignty, and Europe鈥檚 future digital capacity.
A clear throughline today is that open source is a foundation, not an outcome. Europe鈥檚 future depends on sustained investment in maintenance, on interoperability through open standards, on procurement that enables adoption, and on ecosystems that reduce fragmentation rather than reproduce it.
As the EU continues to shape its approach to strategic autonomy, how we achieve this needs to be informed by the realities of building, securing, and maintaining the software systems Europe relies on.
