@_elena @EDPS @Mastodon @EUCommission did @hpod16 make that happen? 😍
@_elena @EDPS @Mastodon @EUCommission this is so good! I'm so glad to see institutions deciding to push the Fediverse on their websites ❤️
@_elena wonderful, slow progress, but progress! @EDPS @Mastodon @EUCommission
@_elena @EDPS @Mastodon @EUCommission
Always great news to find important players here. Thank you, EPDS.
@_elena somewhat more trivially, this reminds me I need to add a Forkiverse icon to https://fridaygoodybag.com/ for the benefit of the 3 people who might see the website :)
@_elena I know that the commission social media team is very aware of this and pushing for the link to be added, but changing their website (and likely updating the underlying software to support a « new » network) seems very complicated…
@renchap thank you for the info Renaud.
Few people may be aware of this, but I have been designing/developing websites MY WHOLE LIFE...
I understand that these things need to go through several rounds of approvals but I also personally know how damn easy it is to do something like that, so I hope they will act on it swiftly
@_elena If you have direct control if your website, yes. I do not know anything about the real situation, but I can foresee that the social team needs to ask another department / digit for this, who themselves are under water and sub-contracted the hosting of the website to a contractor, but the software itself is running on Windows 2000 and maintained by yet another team, and…
@renchap understood. And trust me, they have all my sympathy.
I just wish they followed the example of the Court of Justice of the European Union. They added TONS of social media icons in their footer... you can see how they're all crowded together and sort of breaking the alignment, but at least they made the effort. Go Curia! 🏆
I think that it would be good to have only social media buttons of public value driven, self hosted platforms at the bottom of all pages (e.g. the Mastodon account), and one button that redirects to a page with bigtech share buttons. This page should also have an explanation why these platforms are not recommended and therefore only accessible via that intermediate page.
@_elena @EDPS @Mastodon @EUCommission two out of six icons are european, one out of six icons represent a decentralized, open source social based on ActivityPub that cares about its users. Well, that's a start!
@dunklecat I've been doing a deep dive into the 7 official European institutions to see how many have fediverse icons in their social media navbars. Not looking good... it may be my next article, le sigh.
A special award goes to the European Central Bank, which has links to all the usual offenders PLUS SoundCloud... but no Fedi profile
@_elena thank you for your amazing work. Thanks to you I discovered yunohost, and I always enjoy reading one of your pieces!
@dunklecat thank you! 🥰 I’m currently working on my next YunoHost post about maintenance (not the most glamourous topic, but needs to be done) 😅
@_elena @EDPS @Mastodon @EUCommission if only the EU could remove their relyance on cloudfront (amazon) ..
@hikingdude cool indeed 😊 Franz I know you're in Bavaria... what is the official website of your region? I want to start contacting public institutions to get them on the fediverse...
@_elena
Puh good question, there are quite some:
Administration / Government in levels of regional granularity:
https://www.bayern.de
https://www.oberbayern.de
https://www.bad-toelz.de
Tourism:
https://tourismus.bayern/
https://erlebe.bayern
All of them have SOME sharing icons - none of them in the fediverse.
@hikingdude you weren't joking about the Big Tech links, wow. Which is too bad because bayern.de has the most accessible website I have ever seen with a top navbar showing "easy language" "sign language" and "read out the page". Like they're making incredible efforts at accessibility but are still stuck on Big Tech platforms, sigh. I will definitely reach out to them
@_elena yes indeed. Fediverse/Mastodon still has not too much PR - (and/or is often explained too technical in my point of view).
But would be awesome if you reach out to them. We all should do that more often ...
@hikingdude thank you! Let’s try to change that this year 😉
@_elena would be lovely. How do you approach them? I thougt, simply mailing them might not be so successful?
@hikingdude I'm thinking of building a splash page with an explanation (the why) plus resources to get started (how)
@_elena if you're looking for public organizations I can do a shameless plug and recommend @govdirectory
A bonus is that you also can see if they already are on the fediverse.
@ainali @govdirectory ooooh thank you for the fantastic resource, I really appreciate!!!
Wow indeed a great resource. And based on #WikiData, I like that a lot.
I add on a regular basis Mastodon addresses to WikData resources.
The power of #LinkedData.
