100% kids need this and no smart mobile phone. maybe give dumb Nokia for texting and emergency. but that is all. some social media apps are very dangerous these days combined with AI. You need to protect your kids and family from these tech bros.

@nixCraft While I absolutely agree, it’s not possible however unless all parents participate. If you’re the only kid without a phone, you will be on the receiving end of a lot of crap.
Looking at how some parents give smartphones to first graders this doesn’t seem realistic. However, the government has forbid smartphones at schools. This means that the phones are collected at the start of the day and handed back after school. Doesn’t solve the whole issue.

@nixCraft yep, yep and yep! 😄

Teaching tech-classes myself for a long time now, I've noticed a significant *decline* of understanding of tech-stuff with increased use of "smart" tech stuff.

Most PC hardware from around 2010 is more than sufficient for modern computing workflows (just upgrade RAM and use SSDs/NVRAM, if required).

...and "good games are good games":
I love playing our old games from the 90s with my kid - on "hackable" hardware running #FOSS 😉

@nixCraft We customized Linux to allow only specific sites, blocking ~80% of the internet for safety. But this limits knowledge, and blocking trackers/ads breaks content delivery. True safety needs open education - when universities put learning online.

@nixCraft wow. just wow. You sheeples are divided and conquered and need to wake up. the real problem is that -- according to lesbian chief of unicef -- black africans are breeding too fast and we need to save them from themselves.

@nixCraft that's gross.

we had the household computer like a lot of people, and a common space meant that I didn't feel safe reading topics on sexuality or gender, aging and health, or on travel to other states or countries, unless the entire house was empty (and even then not toootally comfy doing so). The idea that "kids need to be safe" has to be balanced with "kids need access to info", and you can't do that when you're constantly surveilling them. Give them the tools to be safe instead.

@nixCraft I’m over fifty now and grew up in a house with an unwritten ‘no closed doors’ policy. Now I’m fighting with my wife over the 'extreme privacy' our teenager wants. I’m honestly about to remove the "freaking" door. If you need to change clothes, that’s what the bathroom is for. This photo is exactly how it should be.

@nixCraft -- When I was a kid (pre-home computers) the phone hung on the wall in the kitchen. If we wanted to call our friends, we had to do it with Mom right there in the room. Not much room for risky behavior.

@nixCraft Or maybe don’t give your kids smart phones.
