Bonfire 1.0 is out! Check it out, it has an awesome community and a lot of nice features. Also it officially supports #Guix as a hosting platform via an OCI service docs.bonfirenetworks.org/dep... .
They are also starting a crowd funding campaign, if you like the project, consider supporting the team!

@civodul@toot.aquilenet.fr @khinsen@scholar.social @pjotrprins@mastodon.social @dthompson@toot.cat I think this is pretty much the point. To self host complex software stacks there will be always some kind of technical knowledge requirements, even stuff we might consider easy (such as the concept of domain names and DNS).
The point of projects like Fortino and Yunohost is to lower the bar as much as possible, in your example one could maybe look at logs through a web interface instead of having to grep stuff around.
In my experience there is a set of small organizations that have a strong need for a self managed infrastructure, maybe because they are climate justice orgs doing civil disobedience or labor unions, but for many reasons they struggle to keep volounteer highly technical people engaged enough to have a sustainable quality of service. So they end up using Big Tech, not because they want but because the tech usability bar is too high
Looks like I got something to hack on once I get around to it ☺️
EDIT: looks like they ship a Flake, package and module upstream! 🤩
The work of packaging is thankless but invaluable imo, I started working on packaging Bonfire for Guix a couple of years ago but never managed to get further than packaging bonfire_common. I'm not sure if it can be of help but here is my work github.com/fishinthecalculat... .
As for the Nix flake my opionion would be to have it expose modules which allow users to instantiate OCI backed Bonfire instances. this way we can focus on configuration and plug Nix native binaries once they are in Nix mainline. Also if you have any feedback or advice on the approach we are taking feel free to share it!
Always wanted to #selfhost your #Fediverse instance but were always worried about system administration trauma?
Do you ever have to run around your flat, picking up all the leftover parentheses from yesterday's party with your hosting coop coworkers?
Then you are probably the right person, check out this post about fearless #Bonfire hosting on a #Guix System. You'll learn that taking care of a community is much more manageable when you let computer do the boring work for you.
Set up HTTPS, automatic backups, automatic nightly upgrades and join the awesome Bonfire community without a single worry on losing data from your instance.

The Bonfire instance I'm writing this from is provisioned the same way the post describes. Let me know if I can help you running your own.
I yearn for an activist collective that genuinely cares about communicating simply and directly to gather people and develop class consciousness, rather than becoming a small clique of highly educated folks and calling it a day.

A couple of years ago, I was wondering around the Internet, procrastinating adult life as usual. I stumble upon this stunning website, bonfirenetworks.org , and I’m like “daaamn, it looks gooood”, but I had absolutely no idea how this Bonfire would work. It seemed so complex and ambitious…
Now I’m here, the first relase candidate is out, and I can say @[bonfire@indieweb.social really feels like the kind of software I want to see more of in the world.
Thank you for making it and for sticking with it, @mayel@bonfire.cafe 💕
(and thank you @fishinthecalculator for hosting me here)
📣 We're looking for communities and individuals interested in setting up their own Bonfire instances over the next weeks.
We need your help to:
- Use Bonfire in real-world scenarios
- Federate with each other and the wider fediverse to test interoperability
- Monitor performance under active use
Your feedback will help us get Bonfire Social across the finish line to a stable 1.0 release!
We’ll be happy to provide guidance throughout the whole process ✊
Please boost or reach out if interested!
@bonfire@indieweb.social For those interested in setting up Bonfire with a declarative approach on #Guix systems let me know if I can help. Currently my personal instance is running on the latest Guix at bonfire.fishinthecalculator.me .
