Despite being free, what's your biggest complaint about the Linux desktop? 🤔

@nixCraft that not all software works on every distro. I know it would be nearly impossible to achieve that, but still

That was a reason for me to not use OpenSUSE tumbleweed for a long time, and now that most I need works I can't use LACT because there are some errors I can't find anything about online, even with the OpenSUSE rpm

@nixCraft nvidia drivers and figuring out compatible interfaces to use with 3D software. Wtf is this session and an entire gui going bye bye just because what, a driver/graphics issue? Pick one session. develop to it. Don’t make this entire experience harder than it needs to be.

@nixCraft lack of rl support. No computer store ‘nerd herd’ would support Linux for the average user if they had a problem. If you use Linux it’s expected you’re ok fixing your own problem just doing your own searches online.

This isn’t scalable to other types of non tech users who would require specialists.

Hence it will remain an exclusive niche group who use it.

@nixCraft
Missing standardization

"THE Linux desktop"
is something that simply doesn't exist.

And that is the biggest hurdle to get more users into Linux in my opinion.

@nixCraft I had it break more than once after doing an upgrade. Manjaro is especially susceptible to this. Looking for suggestions for more stable Linux alternatives. Ubuntu or Debian?

@nixCraft the stupid hardware. My wifi card is a bastard, my old Nvidia GPU is full of gremlins and my motherboard is full of bloatware.
Gods please, I'll do my nerd penance in the terminal all day but give me a laptop that is open all the way down.

@nixCraft So more in keeping with the spirit of the exercise -
The fact that I had to do no tweaking at all to get it installed on 3 mini PCs and 2 laptops in my household without ever looking at any hardware compatibility lists or anything.

It's just much too easy for newbies to get started without requiring permission from the greybeards.

@nixCraft Serious answer -
The press pretending it's so difficult.
"Even Ubuntu is 200x harder to install than anything you've ever done on Windows".

If you've installed software before, you can handle most modern Linux installers. The defaults are reasonable even when the options "sound scary" so there's really no justification for it.

Commodity hardware is 99.9% supported now. The average "I just bought an all-in-one/laptop from a major vendor" machine is going to work perfectly.

@nixCraft While it has drastically improved over the last few years, touch pads are still very touch-and-go (pun kind of intended).

HID quirks. But ... I mean .. it's petty to even mention outside of being asked.
