Microsoft just turned all Office users into AI users. Lmao. It’s now called the "Microsoft 365 Copilot" app. Get ready for fee increases and having your data opted into training by default with confusing settings. Enshittification has peaked.

@nixCraft there's always the option to switch to healthier tools that don't enforce AI (eg ddocs.new instead of Word)

@nixCraft The really impressive thing is that it appears to still only include the crippled free version of CoPilot unless you pay yet more money.
They named the product after a (dubious) feature it doesn't even have.

I was it for a nonprofit and the cfo decided to migrate the inhouse system to office 365.. i told him it was a horrific idea, he had me do the system migration and then he left for a different company - the nonprofit had a working inhouse server and the old version of office they had they outright owned with a lifetime use license.
Nowadays new is often not better

My work is all-in on both AI and Microsoft. Fortunately the general consensus in my team is that you can use it to write a pointless document nobody will read but not do actual analysis on anything. Still we are probably all "using" Copilot in some metric somewhere.
I've used Open Office for many, many years. Famously, way back in the 90s/00s, even Microsoft HQ employees didn't use MS products...they used Macs.
@nixCraft MS (and oracle) serving big corporate for decades. corporate always had a tech mix with unix, cisco, telecoms... and also, windows clients for the workers and windows servers for commercial licensed software. easier to restrict/cripple/lockdown.
this has not changed. the business model has not fundamentally changed. MS is adapting to corporate needs.
