i guess i'm a tailscale late adopter. it was a snap decision before going to congress, that i needed a stable way to connect back to my desktop computer @ work. now that's also useful for homœ office. when did it become a thing? and would you recommend any of the (self hosted?) alternatives?

@mntmn I've used ZeroTier for almost a decade, it's free unless you have a lot of devices.

@mntmn I'm still a big fan of pure wireguard server installed on my machines. Many routers nowadays, even home routers, have a wireguard server integration.
Very simple port forwarding is necessary if your router doesn't support wireguard.
Openvpn is of course an option too, just not as quick to configure as wireguard.

@mntmn I started using it last year for demos during conferences and now I include it on all my machines hehe … I’m not self hosting yet but a colleague is using https://juanfont.github.io/headscale/0.27.1/ and is happy with it

@mntmn Headscale is a popular self hosted alternative to Tailscale servers. I'm planning to adopt it but not there yet!

@mntmn Tailscale is really neat, I use it for a very similar purpose. You can use an OSS self-hostable control server (Headscale) if you want to self-host: https://headscale.net/stable/

Interestingly enough Tailscale the company actually supports the (fully independent) Headscale devs too: https://tailscale.com/opensource#encouraging-headscale
