In 2025 and with support of @nlnet I was able to continue my efforts, started in 2017, to help forge molecular bonds in our #fediverse petri dish, via my method of "Weaving in public", instrument of Social experience design. See:

The wicked problem is, when trying to organize for world improving radical change.. You can't be an atom that shouts: "All aboard! Let's form an organism and free us from the dish of #Hypercapitalism". It is not how Nature works. And yet, this is what we try to do, each in our own ways, and the means we are able provide.

To do this requires sustainable #evolution at scale for prolonged periods of time. To deliberately evolve into what we want to become: a better #future.

All our attempts to artificially scale, against forces of Nature, are doomed to fail. Nature emerges naturally, spontaneously, and grows organically.

We face the #Paradox of #Emergence in how we organize ourselves.

“Invest in your dreams to make them real”. That is the basic hedonic driver that is behind the SX SEE model for Sustainable ecosystem evolution. It is but a simple credo, but one that more people should take to heart in their daily work, hobby, and life. Dream about the possibilities that exist to see the opportunities that are within reach generally leads to better outcomes. Think now, so you can play better. Get on top of your own game. Our modern world, the doomspiral of the news, our technological progress decoupled from societal progress, disencourages us from having dreams and follow where they lead us.

We are dependent on many other people to support us in our aspirations and to get further in life. To provide help in areas where we are lacking.

The paradox prohibits us from conveying our dreams to others well enough, so they follow along and contribute to them. The paradox manifestates itself all across human society, but in particular where solving wicked problems is concerned. Such as tackling global climate change. Especially when there is much urgency to solve big problems, the paradox comes to bite.

This blog post introduces the Paradox of Emergence and muses on how it holds back the FOSS movement from becoming more sustainable. The diagram shows an exponential 'value creation' graph, with on the X-access the progress of evolution along the solution path. Below the axis the various lifecycle stages of the fediverse service delivery lifecycle are listed: Inception, Ideation, Realization, Delivery, Experience. Rate of value creation & aggregation of the social supply line depends on participation rate.

On the Y-axis is the Potential of the solution design, where value-add of investment in the solution depends on how emergent design leads to desired outcomes. It is not easily perceived as it exists mostly still in emergent space.

Diagram has 3 quadrants. On the bottom left the participation zone is where prolonged Investment is asked, while only little value can be demonstrated in the field. The biggest part above the participation / investment zone is the anticipation zone, where we dream and find possibilities and related opportunities that may have great potential. Expectation mismatch is a risk as the emergent value is stil invisble to most people.

The paradox is solved at an inflection point along the evolution axis of the solution, called appropriately 'the paradox of emergence' point, when actual value is demonstrated by positive societal impact that grows via SX feedback loops. This is the solution zone, the full right side of the diagram, where value creation can grow exponentially and dreams turn to their realization. #ThoughtProvoker 🤔

If we were atoms drifting among countless others in chaotic #commons of a petri dish.

How do we form tight molecules together, collaborate with other atoms around us? Equivalent to what #FOSS tries to do. We need good chemistry to make that happen. Take shape together, #organize, find #governance.

Laws of Nature. With many other molecules and atoms like us, how do we #unite? Form cohesive bonds. Become something much stronger still. How do we reach atoms remotely in vast petri dish space, eternities away?

Akin to how we try on #fedi too. Form substance. Take more meaningful shape. But how? We're organic matter, and our tech is rock hard.

How do we form a biological #ecosystems within this dish? #Sustainable, able to #survive? How do we become alive, gain collective #awareness, #agency, ability to act as #collectively?

Finally how are we able to thrive? Find #freedom? Organisms liberated from this dish?

I discovered, from my own experience in the commons in the past and by writing them down, what I now call and will elaborate for #SX: The #Paradox of #Emergence.

#ParadoxOfEmergence. A deep insight. I should take some time to elaborate its relation to the commons and how our individual work relates to the larger whole. And why we forget about that relation if we "play our own game" autonomously and try to aggregate value to affect big change. It also relates to #ExpectationManagement again: Who are the other players?
